Marshall Field's donated dozens of linens and blankets for the covering of the victims, and they made a floor of the Conway building available for the relief efforts. So many funerals were held on Wednesday, July 28 - Chicago's official day of mourning - that it was impossible to obtain hearses enough to hold the bodies. Accordingly, Marshall Field's sent thirty-nine of their largest auto trucks. These specially decorated trucks were employed as both hearses and for conveying the mourners.
