| We recently received a donation of a complete Chicago Sunday Herald newspaper from Florence and Wilbert Angelica. While we appreciate all donations of artifacts, newspapers more than anything else contain information that is vital to our efforts to document the history of the Eastland Disaster. Newspapers generally include the names and/or faces of the people who were involved in the tragedy.
In the case of the newspaper donated by Florence and Wilbert, we were able to quickly pass along some of the information from the newspaper to other families. For example, one of the many photos that appeared in this newspaper was that of Martha Pfeiffer (a teenage victim of the Eastland Disaster). Once we had scanned Martha's photo, we forwarded it along to Martha's niece. Martha's niece had never seen this particular photo of her aunt before and, upon receiving a copy of it said, "WOW! You've added to our family collection. Thank you so much. Martha's memory doesn't just live on, Martha herself does and, on behalf of all of my family, on both sides of the veil, thank you for all of your diligence and inspired work." |
