...was accompanied by her betrothed... Bertha Wintermute worked at Western Electric as did many of her friends. She attended the employee picnic with her young niece, Hazel Myers, and was accompanied by her betrothed, James Hays. They boarded the Eastland but were able to escape with their lives.
