  • Dear Ted,

    From the President

One of our society's guiding principles is to develop life-long relationships - with individuals as well as with other organi-zations. In fact, and as testament to this, several people have mentioned to us that they believe we do as good a job of developing relationships as any organization that they know.

This focus on developing life-long relationships can be seen in this edition of our newsletter: Of the eight articles below, six highlight organizations sponsoring special events that include the Eastland Disaster. Be sure to follow the highlighted links to find out more information about what these six different organizations are sponsoring.

    Coast-to-Coast
During 2003 while conducting business on behalf of the Society (giving presentations, setting up displays and exhibits, doing research, etc), EDHS volunteers traveled nearly 6,500 miles. That is the equivalent of driving across the country from Miami to Seattle - and back!

    Annual Meeting
The Illinois State Historical Society will be hosting its 105th Annual Meeting. The weekend's events will include historic tours, luncheons and more, plus a dinner featuring a guest speaker who will be discussing the Eastland Disaster.

The weekend's events are detailed here... »

    Cemetery Walking Tour
The Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery, a group of volunteers and supporters of the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago, has organized a walking tour of the cemetery. The tour will include Section 16, where many of the victims of the Eastland Disaster are buried.

Tour details may be found here... »

    Eastland Disaster Exhibit
The Wheaton History Center will feature an Eastland exhibit from May 2004 through January 2005.

Information may be found here... »

    Chicago River Day
The Friends of the Chicago River organization is hosting their 12th annual Chicago River Day. Following the volunteer river cleanup activities in the morning, Chicago River Day will include an afternoon festival (live music, live animals, a free barbecue for volunteers, canoe rides, educational booths including one by EDHS), and more.

    Event information here... »

EDHS Sponsors Scholarships for History Fair
The Chicago Metro History Education Center will sponsor its annual History Fair, an academic competition for middle school and senior high school students. For the fifth consecutive year EDHS will be awarding a scholarship to one or more students.

    89th Anniversary Commemoration
The Eastland Disaster Historical Society will once again host its annual commemoration of the anniversary of the Eastland Disaster. Our event will be held late morning and early afternoon on Saturday, July 24, in downtown Chicago.

    Eastland Corner
Husband and wife Bernard and Elizabeth Beverley were planning to take the Eastland for the excursion across Lake Michigan to the picnic. Days later Bernard's name appeared on a list of the victims.

Their story can be found here... »
