  • Dear Ted,

If you feel that the Eastland Disaster is an important part of Chicago's history, please forward this newsletter to a family member, friend, or colleague! Simply click the "Forward email" link located at the very bottom left of this message. This is a great way to help us share the story of the Eastland Disaster.

    From the President

The stock market is down. The economy is down. Interest rates are down. Philanthropic gifts are down. At a time when most everything has been spiraling in a downward direction, the level of energy and enthusiasm at the Eastland Disaster Historical Society is w-a-y up! Here's why.

The groundwork that was laid the past few years has resulted in a groundswell of activity and events this year, each of which is very exciting and will help to keep us moving forward. This includes: a new and highly capable and committed Board of Trustees; the historical marker rededication/program; a new corporate program that includes live performances by up to thirteen actors; a new book (see article in this newsletter); a "Road Scholars" speaker/program on "Immigrants in Illinois"; a benefit performance of "The Christmas Schooner"; plus other special events. And of course, we are continuing to make great progress in all of our core areas of focus: historical research; family information; web site development; public programs; public displays; and new collaborations with other organizations.

So keep watching this newsletter for announcements of special events and new things to come!

    EDHS receives awards
EDHS received two awards from the Illinois State Historical Society (ISHS) at the annual awards ceremony sponsored by ISHS. Held in Nauvoo, Illinois on April 26, EDHS received one "Superior Achievement" award and one "Best" award, the two highest levels of award in each of the two categories.

    Book being written!
For the past two years we have been working with author Jay Bonansinga, collaborating on a non-fiction book about the Eastland Disaster that Jay will be writing. Jay recently reached an agreement with a publisher to release the book in the Fall of 2004.

The book will share the compelling story of the Eastland Disaster, focusing on the human drama associated with it. It will nicely compliment the scholarly book, "Eastland: Legacy of the Titanic," written by Professor George W. Hilton in 1995.

(For those who currently do not own a copy of George W. Hilton's Eastland: Legacy of the Titanic, this book is available by following the "books, videos, and other merchandise" link at the end of this newsletter.)

    Eastland Corner
Charles Hart was working at the Dunham Towing and Wrecking Company along the Chicago River when the Eastland capsized. Minutes after the tragedy, Charles and several others commandeered two tugboats, made their way up the river and assisted in the rescue of several dozen people.

    Marker to be rededicated
The historical marker that commemorated the site of the Eastland Disaster for over ten years disappeared in the Spring of 2000. A replacement marker (see photo) was quickly reordered and has been in storage since December 2000.

This historical marker will be rededicated during a ceremony on the morning of Thursday July 24 (the 88th anniversary of the tragedy). Following the rededication ceremony, we are planning a brief program with light snacks and drinks. Details will be made available later via a special announcement.
